What PN and SDR actually mean

  • PN (Pressure Nominal) — the pipe’s rated continuous internal pressure in bar at 20°C. PN12.5 = 12.5 bar ≈ 1,250 kPa; PN16 = 16 bar ≈ 1,600 kPa. Ratings de-rate at higher fluid temperatures (relevant for plant rooms, not buried water mains).
  • SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio) — outside diameter ÷ minimum wall thickness. Lower SDR = relatively thicker wall = higher pressure capacity. For PE100: PN16 ↔ SDR11, PN12.5 ↔ SDR13.6 (and PN10 ↔ SDR17).
  • PE100 vs PE80 — the material grade. PE100 has a minimum required strength of 10.0 MPa, letting a thinner wall carry the same pressure as a thicker PE80 pipe. Modern waterworks spec PE100 almost exclusively.

Because HDPE is dimensioned by outside diameter, a PN12.5 and PN16 pipe of the same OD have the same external footprint — only the bore differs. That matters when you are matching fittings, saddles, or an existing network.

Selection factors for Malaysian projects

1. Operating and surge pressure. Sum static head, pump shut-off, and surge allowance. If the worst case exceeds 10 bar or approaches 12.5 bar, PN16 is the safe specification — surge events are exactly when the margin matters.

2. Depth of cover and traffic loading. Shallow mains under roads or heavy vehicles are sometimes upgraded one PN class (such as PN12.5 to PN16) for structural margin, per the designer’s calculation — plastics are pressure vessels, but they are also buried structures.

3. Authority and consultant acceptance. Water authority materials schedules name the accepted pipe classes. Submittal deviation costs more than the pipe saving.

4. Fitting and joint compatibility. Compression fittings, electrofusion couplers, and saddles are PN-rated too — the system rating is the lowest component rating, not the pipe’s.

5. Cost structure. PN16/SDR11 uses more resin material than PN12.5/ SDR13.6 per metre at the same OD, so the price gap is material-driven. On long reticulation mains, PN12.5 on gravity or low-pressure reaches is the economical layout; PN16 on pump discharge and high-pressure zones.

Worked example (PE100, 63 mm OD)

From the published PE100 catalogue schedule: 63 mm OD in PN16 (SDR11) has a nominal wall of 5.8 mm. The same 63 mm OD in PN12.5 (SDR13.6) has a thinner nominal wall of 4.7 mm, with a lower weight per metre (0.877 kg/m against 1.057 kg/m). That lower resin weight is what makes PN12.5 more economical per metre — but it cannot be substituted on a line specified for PN16. See the HDPE PE100 dimensions spec table for the published 20–630 mm schedule.

Common contractor mistakes

Specification checklist

  • Design pressure + surge case documented (bar)
  • PN class and SDR locked in the submittal (PN16/SDR11 or PN12.5/SDR13.6)
  • Material grade PE100 confirmed
  • Wall thickness read from the dimension table for the OD being laid
  • Fittings and joints rated to the same PN class
  • Certification requirement (SIRIM/SPAN) confirmed with the authority
  • Long sizes in coil vs straight lengths matched to trench method
